Leeds are on the brink of selling their fifth international this season as Seth Johnson is currently in talks with Middlesbrough regarding a move to the Riverside.
Johnson travelled up to the north-east with agent Leon Angel today to meet Boro chairman Steve Gibson and begin negotiations on a four-and-a-half year deal.
The fee is understood to be in the region of £4m, (€6m) with Leeds accepting a loss of £3m (€4.5m) for a midfielder they signed from Derby just 15 months ago.
Due to a series of injuries, Johnson has made just 20 appearances for Leeds, with just four as a substitute this campaign, with his last start being the final game of last season.
If Johnson agrees terms and passes a medical, he will follow Rio Ferdinand, Robbie Keane, Lee Bowyer and Olivier Dacourt out of the Elland Road exit door this season as Leeds continue their sell off to further ease their debts and reduce a crippling wage bill.
Johnson could yet be joined by Jonathan Woodgate as speculation is rife the centre-back is poised to move to Newcastle for around £10m (€15m).
Leeds state they have received no bid for the England international, however it may be they do not want to go public after what happened last week with the Robbie Fowler deal when they announced a £7m (€10.5m) fee had been agreed with Manchester City.
The Leeds board, though, have been warned they risk incurring the wrath of the fans who are becoming increasingly angry with what they see as “asset stripping.”
“If Woodgate was sold there would be uproar, it would be bordering on insanity,” said an angry Simon Jose, co-founder of the Leeds Supporters’ Forum.
