Thirteen police officers are reported to be injured in East Belfast last night when they came under what they described as sustained and orchestrated attacks by nationalists.

The police had been called in to deal with trouble in the Short Strand area, from which petrol bombs and other missiles had been thrown into the adjacent loyalist area of Cluan Place.

Catholic residents of Clandyboye Gardens in the Short Strand claimed they had earlier been attacked by loyalists throwing stones and bottles across the peace line.
