The Commission for Energy Regulation (CER) has reportedly predicted that electricity prices in Ireland could be set to increase by up to 36% due to rising fuel costs and charges for carbon emissions.
Reports this morning said the commission had described the 36% figure as a "worst-case scenario", but whatever increase does materialise, it is likely to be higher than the previous predictions of 12% to 14%.
The CER is still considering what tariffs to apply for electricity use in 2006, but this morning's reports said a spokesman had indicated significant price rises could be expected.
