The Carrickmacross Dog Shelter in Co Monaghan got an early Christmas present from Lidl this morning when 100 kilos of free dog food arrived courtesy of the German discount supermarket.
Lidl made the donation after the shelter posted a picture on its Facebook page of a pensioner who for the last 6 years has donated food to the shelter at Christmas. The story was picked up by Irish news site The Daily Edge and quickly gained popularity online.
The man, who is a dog lover, saves up a little of his pension every week to make the donation of dog food from Lidl.
In recognition of his generosity Lidl has made a donation to the shelter and the pensioner has been rewarded for his generosity with €500 in vouchers for the supermarket.
The good-spirited pensioner makes his donation anonymously, so staff from Lidl used social media to track him down today.
