A man is in a critical condition following a serious assault in Galway city in the early hours of this morning.

A man is in a critical condition following a serious assault in Galway city in the early hours of this morning.

The incident happened at around 3.30am when a number of youths became involved in a row outside a fast food outlet on Shop Street.

One of the men, a 22-year-old, received a serious head injury and when ambulance personnel arrived on the scene he was unconscious.

He was taken to University Hospital Galway where his condition is described as critical.

The scene has been preserved for a technical examination and Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to come forward.
