Meteor reaches 750,000 customer milestone

Mobile phone operator Meteor has reached the 750,000 customer milestone, it was revealed today.

Mobile phone operator Meteor has reached the 750,000 customer milestone, it was revealed today.

This represents a 50% increase its customer base since November of last year.

“To gain a quarter of a million customers in just one year is an exceptional performance and it underlines the major competitive impact that Meteor has had on the market,” said Meteor chief executive Robert Haulbrook.

“We have been investing in our network, investing in marketing and investing in our customers by offering better value across all sectors and consumers are responding and moving to Meteor.”

The company’s market share has now increased to more than 16%, with more customers moving to Meteor than to any of the other networks.

“The ability to switch networks while keeping your full number tends to be more important to bill-pay and high-use pre-pay customers,” said Mr Haulbrook.

“The fact that we have attracted number portability customers than the bigger networks have gained from us and from each other combined, shows that we are competing successfully across all sectors.”

Meteor has increased its activity in the bill-pay sector and contract customers now make up almost 10% of the total customer base, up from just 2% in 2005.

“There is no doubt that this market has changed” the Meteor CEO continued. “It is now highly competitive because we forced it to become that and this is good for all consumers. We have made the other operators compete and we are recognised as the consumer champion because we are driving call costs down.”

New retail stores are planned for the coming months including outlets in Dundrum Shopping Centre, Liffey Valley Shopping Centre and Omni Park Shopping Centre in Dublin and in Ennis, Tralee, Sligo, Wexford, Portlaoise and Drogheda.
