Musician Edwyn Collins has had emergency brain surgery, it emerged today.
The pop star turned producer, who had a huge solo hit in 1995 with A Girl Like You, suffered a cerebral haemorrhage last month.
Doctors operated on the 45-year-old Edinburgh-born singer/guitarist, who fronted 80s band Orange Juice, last Friday.
His wife Grace Maxwell, also his manager, posted a message on his website which said: “Edwyn had an emergency operation on Friday 25, February.
“He has come through it as well as can be hoped for and is continuing to fight. Thank you for all the loving thoughts.
“When there is more to report, I’ll let you all know.”
Grace is maintaining a bedside vigil by her husband at a London hospital while doctors try to stabilise his condition.
Collins, who has a 14-year-old son William, formed Orange Juice in 1979.
The forerunner of bands such as Franz Ferdinand, Belle & Sebastian and The Smiths, the four-piece earned a devoted cult following and led the Glasgow pop scene.
His single A Girl Like You, from the 1994 solo album Gorgeous George, became a multi-million selling global hit.
Some of Orange Juice’s early work is due to be re-released next month.
