Prison Service plans new measures to guard prisoners' safety

The Irish Prison Service is to implement a recommendation regarding prisoner safety.

The Irish Prison Service is to implement a recommendation regarding prisoner safety.

It comes from the man appointed to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death of a prisoner in Mountjoy earlier this week.

Michael Mellet was brought in by the Minister for Justice to investigate the death of Gary Douch.

The 21-year-old was beaten to death, despite having expressed fears for his safety to prison officials.

Mr Mellet has made an interim recommendation that where prison authorities accept there may be substance to an allegation of serious threats, the prisoner should be put in a sole occupancy cell for at least 24 hours.

This would allow time for them to investigate the source, nature and seriousness of the threat.

Further recommendations are likely to emerge from three separate investigations into Gary Douch's death.
