The FTSE 100 Index closed down 9.9 points at 5208.1 on a quiet trading day.
Both the Dow Jones Industrial Average and Nasdaq had fallen back by London's close, as investors banked profits following a run of gains
The main focus was British Airways, which posted full-year results.
Losses come in at £200 million - the worst since BA's privatisation 15 years ago - and the airline was unable to say when it would return to profitability.
But most had predicted an even gloomier picture and the shares closed up 2p at 237½p, although they were unable to hold on to earlier gains of 3%.
