In two separate moves at the Fianna Fail Ard Fheis today, party representatives declared war on smoking and also insisted that they would tackle Ireland’s weak infrastructure.
The Minister for transport, Mary O'Rourke, was adamant at the Ard Fheis that she wanted to revamp the delivery of infrastructure if Fianna Fail is returned to power.
She would prefer to see roads and public transport, which are presently delivered by the Department of Environment and the Department of Public Enterprise respectively, dealt with under the one brief.
Health minister Michael Martin was also setting goals at the Fianna Fail assembly.
He wants cigarettes to be eliminated from Irish society.
At the same time, the Minister conceded that the general election will centre on issues of health but maintained that Fianna Fail’s policies and proposals were unbeatable.
Criticising Fine Gael, he mocked the opposition party’s contribution to the health debate.
