US kills 100 rebels in Samarra

Heavy tank shelling and exchanges of machine gun fire erupted today in the northern area of Samarra as US and Iraqi forces conducted mopping up operations in the former rebel stronghold.

Heavy tank shelling and exchanges of machine gun fire erupted today in the northern area of Samarra as US and Iraqi forces conducted mopping up operations in the former rebel stronghold.

The gunfire began about 5.30pm (15.30 Irish time) around the city’s northern district of Qadisiya.

About 5,000 US and Iraqi troops stormed into Samarra, seizing major government installations and killing more than 100 insurgents, according to US and Iraqi authorities.

Samarra had been viewed as one of the major rebel strongholds in Iraq.
