The Red Cross is expected to accept the Star of David (Magen David) as one of its symbols today, paving the way for Israel’s Magen David rescue service to join the international organisation, Israeli media reported.
Until now, according to the Geneva Convention, rescue services had to adopt either the cross or the red crescent in order to be accepted into the Red Cross.
Although the Red Cross has for years wanted to adopt the Star of David as well, Arab member nations opposed the move, blocking the acceptance of Israel’s Magen David.
According to the Israeli media, the change will bring greater subsidies and donations to Magen David, improving the group’s services.
