Farmers slam new EC proposals on CAP reform

The Irish Farmers Association (IFA) has criticised new proposals put forward by the European Commission as part of a review of the EU's Common Agriculture Policy.

The proposals are aimed at reforming the way €44bn worth of annual subsidies are divided among the 27 member states.

A six-month consultation process will take place before the commission puts forward legislation that must be approved by the member states.

The IFA claims the EC's proposals, as they currently stand, would cost Irish farmers at least €100m-a-year in EU handouts.
