The Dakar Rally was today left shocked after one of the event’s legendary riders was killed in an accident.
Italian rider Fabrizio Meoni, who had been running second in the bike class, crashed his KTM around 184 kilometres into stage 11, between Atar and Kiffa in Mauritania.
A medical helicopter was scrambled to assist the two-time Dakar winner, aged 47, but after 45 minutes of treatment he was pronounced dead.
