The Minister for Agriculture has announced a list of modifications to the foot-and -mouth disease control measures.

The modifications will see an end to the permit system for the movement of horses, except for imported horses.

However, the ban on sheep shearing has been extended until May 28.

Permits for the movement of cattle within a fragmented holding will be issued on application by district veterinary offices from next Monday.

Herdowners will not be required to provide advance details of tag numbers, but the total number of cattle to be moved must be specified.

The president of the IFA, Tom Parlon, is due to meet the Minister for Agriculture before the end of the week to ask for marts to be re-opened from June 1.
