Rome airport closed after fire

Rome’s Fiumicino international airport has been closed due to an overnight fire.

Italy’s flagship Alitalia airline said in a statement that all departures have been cancelled up to 2pm (midday Irish time) and that only intercontinental flights will be allowed to land during that period.

Alitalia advised all passengers scheduled to fly during those hours not to go to the airport, and roads to the site were closed.

Sky TG 24 reported that the fire, which broke out after midnight in the main international terminal, was under control and that it involved about 400 square metres of retail space.

No cause was immediately identified.

Images broadcast on TV showed smoke still coming from the terminal this morning.
