Politicians to assess Orde's first year in job

Nationalists and unionists are expected to give their assessments today of PSNI chief constable Hugh Orde's first year in the job.

Nationalists and unionists are expected to give their assessments today of PSNI chief constable Hugh Orde's first year in the job.

Mr Orde took over as chief constable exactly one year ago today and has overseen significant changes in the intervening period.

He was viewed with suspicion by many in the Force as he had been involved in the Stevens Inquiry into alleged collusion between the British security services and the killers of Belfast solicitor Pat Finucane.

When he joined the PSNI, morale among officers was low, many senior detectives were taking redundancy and there were unacceptably high sickness levels.

Mr Orde still has a huge job on his hands instilling confidence in the police within both nationalist and unionist communities.

However, after the quietest loyalist marching season in several years, many would agree that he is making steady progress.
