A female shop assistant is recovering today after being repeatedly assaulted during a raid on a Co Offaly supermarket last night.

A gang of five masked men armed with an iron bar and a hatchet held up staff as they were closing for the night at the Lidl branch in Edenderry.

Three staff members were forced into a back office, where one female worker was assaulted until she handed over the keys to the safe.

The gang escaped in a waiting car with an undisclosed sum of cash.
