Roche seeking to employ waste services regulator

Minister for the Environment Dick Roche is to seek feedback from the public with a view to appointing a waste services regulator.

Minister for the Environment Dick Roche is to seek feedback from the public with a view to appointing a waste services regulator.

It comes amid growing complaints over the varying costs of collecting waste from county to county by the private sector.

The minister says private waste collection is one of a handful of services not covered by a regulator.

Mr Roche believes that the appointment of a regulator will keep costs competitive and maintain quality of service.

“What I have in mind is to put in place a regulator that will make sure that the operation of the waste services is controlled and make sure that public service obligations are taken into account,” he said today.

“We'll obviously be looking for views on this, and I hope to see a regulator sooner rather than later. I think an error was made in the past when we didn't put a regulator in here.”
