Ferguson gives reasons for turning down international return

Barry Ferguson has revealed loyalty to his family and Birmingham boss Alex McLeish was the reason behind his decision not to play for Scotland again.

The midfielder was banned from international selection in April 2009 for his role in the “Boozegate” affair but was offered the opportunity to return by Scotland boss Craig Levein.

However, Ferguson this week informed Levein he had no intention of playing for his country again.

He told the Herald: “The main reason, as far as I am concerned, is to spend more time with my family and stay true to a promise I made them when I signed for Birmingham City.

“When I moved down to England, it was on the understanding I’d be coming back up the road during the international breaks to spend a week or possibly two weeks with my family and that is the way things have worked out up until now.

“The second reason is that I want to continue to give my best to Birmingham.

“Alex McLeish was the man who put his neck on the line when he signed me and I want to repay his faith by making sure I’m as fit as I possibly can be and that means not playing an additional five or six games for my country.”
