Paraglider killed in mid-air collision
A paraglider has died and another is being treated for serious injuries after they collided in mid-air, emergency services in England said tonight.
West Midlands Ambulance Service said both men were airlifted to Birmingham’s Selly Oak Hospital after the accident on the Long Mynd in Shropshire at about 2.15pm today.
A spokesman for the service confirmed that two rapid response vehicles, two ambulance crews and the Midlands Air Ambulance had attended the scene, along with a police helicopter and fire crews.
“Attempts were made to resuscitate one of the men at the scene,” the spokesman said. “These attempts continued while the man was flown by the Midlands Air Ambulance to Selly Oak Hospital in Birmingham.
“Unfortunately, despite the best efforts of the crew, nothing could be done to save the man and he was confirmed dead at hospital.”
The second man, believed to be aged in his 40s or 50s, had leg suffered fractures and internal injuries.
He was flown by police helicopter, accompanied by a paramedic, to Selly Oak.
