New chart for bands which 'didn't make it'

BBC bosses have created a new chart – for bands that have never made it into the charts.

BBC bosses have created a new chart – for bands that have never made it into the charts.

Digital radio station BBC 6 Music, which champions emerging acts, is launching the weekly rundown to promote acclaimed artists who have had only modest sales.

Performers who have made it into the top 40 will be be barred from the 6 Music Chart, which will be broadcast each Saturday afternoon.

Critically acclaimed acts such as I Am Kloot, Martina Topley Bird and Amy Winehouse are among the artists who will feature in the show.

Compiler of the national countdown, the Official UK Chart Company, will supply the list of big sellers but will filter out classical, jazz and spoken word releases.

Station programme editor John Sugar said: “6 Music prides itself on championing new music and regularly features artists like Sleepy Jackson, Martina Topley Bird, British Sea Power and Pete Yorn.

“We were the first to give Athlete a radio session and now we have an opportunity, with the help of The Official UK Charts Company, to give even more new artists a platform for their music.

“If you take an act like British Sea Power. They’ve not made the top 40 yet but they will soon and they will no longer be eligible and the show will go on to give exposure to more great acts.”

The show – presented by newcomer Vic McGlynn is on each Saturday at 4-6pm.
