Olympic champion Justin Gatlin broke the 100m world record by clocking a time of 9.76 seconds in the Doha Super Grand Prix in Qatar.
Gatlin, 24, also the winner of last summer’s World Championships gold medal, beat Asafa Powell’s 11-month-old record by one hundredth of a second on the desert leg of the IAAF World Athletics tour.
The American ace knocked 0.09 seconds from his previous best time, which he set when winning the 2004 Olympic crown in Athens.
“I am the best of the best because I am the Olympic champion, the world champion and the world record holder now,” said Gatlin.
“I thought I would do it and I kept my word. I am a man who likes challenges and my acceleration today was phenomenal.
“The timing could be further improved this year, probably in Europe.”
