India rejects story of hunt for bin Laden in Kashmir

India has denied a report that US and British special forces are hunting for Osama bin Laden in Kashmir.

India has denied a report that US and British special forces are hunting for Osama bin Laden in Kashmir.

The Daily Telegraph said intelligence reports indicated an extremist Islamic group was protecting him there.

India's defence ministry spokesman says the report is baseless.

The newspaper said Indian intelligence had told the CIA that it believed bin Laden was being protected by Harkat-ul-Mujahideen.

The Pakistan-based group is closely linked to bin Laden.

The British-American team was acting in an advisory role to Indian Army special forces, the newspaper added.

The defence spokesman, P.K. Bandopadhyaya, said: "No outside forces are operating in Jammu-Kashmir and the report appears to be a figment of the reporter's imagination."

Earlier, spokesmen for the US military and the CIA said they had no information about any such operation and they would not discuss it if such a hunt was ongoing.
