Five people were charged by police in Northern Ireland today following a kidnapping at the start of the week.

The three men and two women, aged between 17 and 35, were due to appear at Banbridge Magistrates Court in Co Down later.

Four have been charged with kidnapping and one with withholding information.

A sixth person remains in police custody.

The charges follow the kidnap of a man in the Warrenpoint area of Co Down on Monday and his release after a ransom payment the following day.

The Police Service of Northern Ireland said arrests and the recovery of a sum of money was the result of a “major police operation”.
