A judge today provisionally charged three Moroccans with the mass killings in the Madrid terror attacks, and ordered them and two Indian suspects held for further investigation, a court official said.
The Moroccans, picked up two days after the March 11 bombings, were charged with belonging to an armed group responsible for at least 190 killings and 1,400 attempted killings, said the court official.
The two Indians, also in custody since last Saturday, were charged with collaborating with an armed group, said the official.
Judge Juan del Olmo’s decision to provisionally charge the five means they can be held for two years in jail without formal charges. The period could then later be extended for two more years.
The five told the judge that they had nothing to do with the bombings that killed 202 people, said the official.
They all said they were sleeping at the time of the morning rush-hour attacks and have no links with al-Qaida or any other terrorist groups.
