Ireland falls eight places in league of education spending

Ireland has reportedly fallen eight places in an Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) league of education spending in 27 European countries.

Reports this morning said the percentage of Gross National Product spent on education in Ireland fell from 6.1% in 1995 to 5.1% in 2001.

This saw Ireland’s ranking in the OECD league table of education spending falling from seventh in 1995 to 15th in 2001.

The news comes at a time when Irish colleges and universities are facing a major shortfall in funding.

The Higher Education Authority said last week that Irish universities were not financially sustainable, while the OECD has recommended the reintroduction of third-level fees to help colleges raise funds.
