Langer scoops award

Bernhard Langer picked up the European Tour’s Golfer of the Month award today - as he prepared to take on world number one Vijay Singh at Wentworth.

The only golf Langer played in September saw him miss the halfway cut in the German Masters. But the award, of course, was for his captaincy of the Ryder Cup team in their record-breaking victory in Detroit.

“I am very proud and honoured to receive this,” he said on the eve of the HSBC World Match Play championship, an event he is returning to after nine years.

“However, I could only do so much in terms of preparation and organisation. The players did the hard work. They hit the shots and this award is as much for all of them as it is for me.”

Whether Langer is prepared to lead Europe again at the K Club near Dublin in 2006 remains to be seen.

He is not even saying whether he wants to be a candidate again and does not plan to.

“There’s no rush to make a decision and it’s not up to me anyway,” he commented. “It’s up to the committee and they are going to approach the person they think is the best person and we will take it from there.”

Langer, though, did add that he intends to make his playing career a priority again, but his hopes against Singh are not helped by the fact that he has not played much lately and has suffered tennis elbow and a recurrence of the wrist trouble which kept him out of action earlier this season.
