Wright: Owen fitness not a worry

Ian Wright has backed Michael Owen to lead England towards World Cup success this season despite concerns over the fitness of the Newcastle striker.

Owen, the leading goalscorer in the current national squad, has been injured since December with a fractured metatarsal but former England striker Wright has no concerns with starting him in attack for this summer’s tournament.

The 26-year-old Owen is expected to make just one more appearance for Newcastle this season - he has only made 10 since arriving from Real Madrid in August – but Wright still considers him to be England’s leading striker.

Wright said: “There’s no question that Owen should play, he’s a world-class striker and has proven class on the biggest stage.

“Owen and Rooney should lead the attack, even if he’s only played a game in the build-up. With Peter Crouch and Jermain Defoe on the bench we also have the substitutes to make an impact.

“It’s the World Cup so there’s more than enough time for Michael to get back, it’s not a problem for a player like he is, a predator in the penalty area who takes chances if they are there.

Wright, who earned 33 caps for England, added: “He knows what it takes to be ready for it and I’m sure he will be doing everything he can.”

Despite injury limiting his appearance this season, Owen has scored 10 goals for club and country, including the late double which grabbed victory for England against Argentina in a friendly.

Wright believes England’s squad, and performances similar to the one against Argentina, give the country a chance to make a huge impression at the finals in Germany.

“I’m always very optimistic about England,” said Wright, who has been in London promoting Sure FanZone, which gives 150 fans the chance to watch England’s World Cup games in a unique atmosphere on the banks of the Thames.

“I genuinely think we can win or at least get to the latter stages of the tournament. I’m very confident and cannot imagine what England would be like if we managed to do it. There would be so much love in the country.”
