Jennifer Capriati is through to the quarter-finals of the US Open after beating Barbara Schett in straight sets.

The number two seed won 6-3 6-3 in just over an hour at the Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Schett saved two match points before double-faulting at 3-5 in the second set to concede the match.

The Austrian had twice before beaten Capriati but the American looked to be in no mood to miss out on her first quarter-final appearance at Flushing Meadows since 1991.

Capriati will face Amelie Mauresmo or Nathalie Tauziat in the next round.
