Zeta-Jones catches eye of White House hopeful

Catherine Zeta-Jones may have won the heart of one of Hollywood’s most famous stars, Michael Douglas, but she has also caught the eye of presidential hopeful John Kerry.

Mr Kerry, who is challenging George Bush for the White House, listed the Welsh Oscar winner alongside Charlize Theron as his favourite “sexy” movie star.

He also had eyes for Marilyn Monroe who was “funny, complicated, and obviously very attractive”.

And he had words of advice for men looking for love, in an interview in the latest GQ magazine.

“It’s a woman who loves being a woman. Who wears her womanhood. Who knows how to flirt and have fun. Smart. Confident. Has a sense of self. Strong. And obviously sexy and saucy and challenging,” said the married senator.

Mr Kerry is wed to Teresa Heinz Kerry, the billionaire heir to the Heinz foods empire.

“Thank God I found Teresa,” said Mr Kerry, whose first marriage, to Julia Thorne, failed.

“Those were not good days is all I can say,” he said of middle-aged singledom.

“It’s just not fun. That’s not a good world.

Meanwhile, a former flame told how the Massachusetts senator used to whisper French sweet nothings to her during a 20 month romance in the early 1990s, when Kerry was a single man.

“All I can tell you is that John is 100% male,” said Lee Whitnum, an aspiring novelist.

She told the New York Daily News: “John would whisper French phrases in my ear. I would say, ’Speak to me in French!’ and so he’d do it.

“I don’t know what he was saying. I don’t speak French,” she said.

The former election campaign aide told how Mr Kerry wooed her, driving her home on a snowy afternoon and asking her to dinner.

“I was technically an employee and a co-worker, a campaign staff worker and, I don’t know, his lover.”

She said they had a secret romance which ended when it became clear that he would not marry her.

“I was really sick. I guess I was dying of a broken heart. I was crazy about him,” she said.

Mr Kerry’s representatives declined to comment.
