An Amsterdam jewellery shop assistant has stolen £5.6m worth of diamonds and gone into hiding.

The 25-year-old thief, identified by police as Dennis P, had lived with his parents until the robbery on Saturday.

He was taken on by Gassan Diamonds less than four months ago after undergoing ‘‘a tough screening process,’’ said owner Benno Lesser .

The man returned to the shop in the evening after work and filled a box with several hundred diamonds.

The loss will not be covered by insurance because the thief had been hired and trusted with the code to the safe, Lesser said.
