Wales’s Phillip Price, chasing his first win since beating Phil Mickelson at last September’s Ryder Cup, led by two with nine holes to play in the Smurfit European Open at the K Club today.
Three clear overnight, Price was caught when cup team-mate Darren Clarke birdied the second and eagled the fourth, but the Ulsterman then had three successive bogeys.
A 30-foot birdie putt on the short eighth took Price to 15 under and a good bunker save at the next kept his advantage over Scot Alastair Forsyth, Argentina’s Angel Cabrera and Zimbabwe’s Mark McNulty, who at 49 was trying to become the European tour’s oldest-ever winner.
