When the rain started to fall, Magdalena Maleeva of Bulgaria was 4-1 up in the first set against Amy Frazier of USA and Lina Krasnoroutskaya was 5-1 and serving for the set against Brenda Schwartz.

Elsewhere, Jonas Bjorkman was 2-1 up against Roger Federer of Switzerland, with Federer serving and Conchita Martinez was 1-1 against Lillia Osterloh.
