Fewer dog owners paid fines last year

Dog wardens issued more fines in 2013, however less people are paying them.

Fines were issued for fouling, not having a dog licence or having a dog under proper control

A total of 4,005 on-the-spot fines were issued to dog owners last year, up from 3,819 in 2012.

However, there was a 21% fall in the numbers paying their fines, which were increased from €30 to €100 last June.

South Dublin County Council issued the most fines in the country at 1,165.

However, a mere 47 dog owners paid the fee and 47 were prosecuted.

South Dublin also has the largest deficit for control services at more than €226,000.

The DSPCA has called for more education of dog owners about their legal responsibilities.
