The young daughter of trainer Derek Shaw has died after falling from a tractor at her family's yard, it was revealed today.

Ellie Mae Shaw was sitting on the tractor with her father and fell as he lifted her down.

The accident happened at the family's stables in the village of Sproxton, near Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire, at about 4.40pm on Monday.

The 15-month-old was flown to hospital by air ambulance but died a short time later, police said.

A relative said: "It is just so tragic. It is just so unbelievable that it has happened."

Mr Shaw and his wife, Lyndsey, were still being comforted by relatives at their home.

A successful jump jockey for 11 years, Shaw became a trainer in 1991. He was based in Nottinghamshire before moving to Sproxton, where he set up Derek Shaw Racing on a 50-acre site.

Leicestershire Police said they were investigating the incident.
