A report commissioned by the Department of the Environment has recommended the introduction of a 10% tax on chewing gum.
The report said the money raised from the initiative should be used to foot the cost of cleaning chewing gum from streets and footpaths throughout Ireland. The move could raise up to €4m annually.
It also recommended levies on fast-food wrappers and ATM receipts, but said this could be avoided if the companies responsible for such litter reached an alternative agreement with the Government for tackling the problem.
Launching the document today, Environment Minister Martin Cullen said the public would be invited to make submissions over the coming four weeks before the proposals were brought before the cabinet for consideration.
