The Department of Agriculture has reported two cases of BSE in Co Waterford.

The department said the disease was discovered in two nine-year-old cows.

A total of 124 BSE cases have been detected so far this year, compared to 229 for the same period last year.

Officials said the fall in cases indicated that enhanced controls introduced in 1996 and early 1997 were proving effective.
