Violent electrical storms have forced the abandonment of play for today at the Italian Open.

The weather showed no signs of improving and play was abandoned for the day at 2pm (1pm Irish time).

Tournament officials will now decide whether to reduce the tournament to 54 holes, a distinct possibility given the limited amount of daylight available.

Ian Poulter is leading the tournament after the first day's play after his round of 61 left him 11 under par.

Ireland's Padraig Harrington and Graeme McDowell are tied at one under after their first rounds.
