Mandela's wife attends service of drag death taxi driver

The wife of former South African president Nelson Mandela has attended a memorial service for a man who died in police custody after being dragged from a police vehicle in an incident that was filmed by onlookers.

Several hundred people gathered at a stadium to remember Mido Macia, a taxi driver from Mozambique who died last week.

The event was held in the Daveyton township east of Johannesburg, where Mr Macia was detained by police.

Mr Mandela’s wife, Graca Machel, is the widow of former Mozambican president Samora Machel.

She criticised police conduct in Mr Macia’s death, saying officers are supposed to protect South Africans from violent crime. She said South Africa faces “big trouble”.

Eight police officers have been charged with murder over Mr Macia’s death. Their bail application was postponed to Friday.
