Overseas visitor numbers up 6.9% for Q3

The number of overseas visitors to Ireland has increased by 6.9% in the period from July to September 2003.

The number of overseas visitors to Ireland has increased by 6.9% in the period from July to September 2003.

There were 2,187,000 recorded visits in the third-quarter of this year compared to 2,045,000 over the same period in 2002.

Access by cross-channel routes was up by 3.7% while those traveling from the continent rose by 13.5%, according to figures released by the Central Statistics Office.

Cross Atlantic visitors from the USA and Canada rose 7.6% also. The combined expenditure of overseas visitors was estimated at €1,491m for this period.

However, the total number of overseas visitors is still down 2.5% on the figure for the third quarter of 2000.

The number of Irish citizens traveling abroad was up 2.5% to 1,593,000 on the 2002 third quarter figure.
