General Motors vice chairman Steve Girsky said the company will not sell Opel, its struggling European brand.
Mr Girsky said after a speech in Detroit that GM will keep Opel and is developing plans to fix it.
Earlier Fiat and Chrysler chief executive Sergio Marchionne told reporters that he would not close the door on potential partners when asked if he was interested in Opel.
But Mr Girsky said he spoke to Mr Marchionne on Sunday and the topic of selling Opel was not mentioned.
GM's European operations lost $292m (€228.5m) before taxes in the third quarter.
