The European Commission is to provide nearly €60m in aid to the cash-strapped African Union which is struggling to finance plans on the continent, officials said today.

In a landmark visit to the AU headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, European Commission President Jose Manual Barroso will sign over the funds to bolster the 53-nation organisation, said Tim Clarke, the EC’s ambassador to Ethiopia.

Although the funding from the EC cannot be used for peacekeeping it can be used to meet running costs of the African bloc which has struggled to raise funds for its program of developing closer ties among African countries.
