At least nine people have been injured after a bomb exploded outside a club in Karachi.

The bomb, hidden inside a car, detonated outside the city's beachside Mariana Club where hundreds of people were celebrating the New Year.

Pakistani police suspect the car bomb was planted by Islamic militants, though no group has claimed responsibility.

The youth wing of the orthodox Jamaat-e-Islami, or Islamic Party, had warned people against celebrating the New Year.

Meanwhile, a least 15 other people sustained bullet wounds as party-goers fired into the air with automatic weapons in several other neighbourhoods. One person is said to be in a critical condition.

Despite a heavy police presence, witnesses say it was the fiercest fighting in recent years.
