Gerrard's loyalty hailed by Liverpool boss

Steven Gerrard’s decision to put loyalty before riches has been applauded by Liverpool chief executive Rick Parry.

Steven Gerrard’s decision to put loyalty before riches has been applauded by Liverpool chief executive Rick Parry.

The England midfielder and club captain, who signed a four-year deal at Anfield last November, was widely expected to join the Chelsea revolution.

But instead he has decided to remain close to his roots.

Parry said: “This is a positive story for Liverpool and perhaps maybe for football.”

Now the club are hoping England striker Michael Owen – who has 12 months to run on his current deal – will follow suit.

Asked if Gerrard’s decision could influence Owen, Parry said: “I don’t think what has happened with Steven can do any harm. That is our next challenge.

“Michael is very important to our future. We hope he will commit himself to the club. We have always been reasonably optimistic he will do.”

Gerrard’s statement of intent is a real boost for coach Rafael Benitez, ahead of his first season in charge.

Parry said: “Having a new coach was a factor in Stevie’s thoughts but the decision in the end was his.

“He met Rafael with the other England players and will be speaking to him soon after making his decision. He will be doing it with a slightly clearer head.

“He was excited about Rafael’s appointment as he is one of Europe’s top managers. Stevie is convinced we are all as ambitious as he is.”

Gerrard revealed he had been contemplating leaving his hometown team – he was born and brought up in neighbouring Huyton – where he had arrived as an eight-year-old.

But after he talked things through with his close-knit family he thought it best to stay put.

“The last three or four weeks have been really confusing for me,” he said.

“I have been involved in a big tournament and that is the reason I have been really quiet about my future.

“I have not really been happy with the progress the club has made the last two years as I have often told the media.

“For the first time in my career I thought about the possibility of leaving Liverpool for another club. But after Euro 2004 and sitting down with my family , having another meeting with Rick and spending time with my agent, I am staying on at Liverpool.

“I am 100% committed to the club. I have gone with a decision that has been made with my heart. I love the club, I love the supporters and that is what it boiled down to.”
