SPL: O’Neill welcomes trophy presentation plans

Martin O’Neill today applauded the Scottish Premier League’s decision to present Celtic with the title trophy if they beat Livingston on April 6, but fears many of their Irish supporters will not be able to join the party.

The Glasgow giants will win their first back-to-back championships in 20 years if they can take three points at Parkhead next weekend.

But with the match being shown live by BSkyB at 12 noon, many of the travelling Hoops fans will be struggling to see their side’s crowning glory.

‘‘It will be an exciting finale to the season without a doubt,’’ said O’Neill.

‘‘At the minute though we have the small matter of getting the three points that we need to win the league and finish off our SPL campaign.

‘‘It’s a bit strange to have three home games on the trot, but we’ll get on with it.

‘‘The fact the game is kicking off at noon makes no difference to us because we are getting used to different kick-off times and the players are used to training around that time anyway.

‘‘It’s not a massive problem, but it might cause difficulties for any fans travelling from Ireland or further afield.

‘‘We know we’ve got absolutely everything to play for and it’s been nice to know the trophy will be handed out if we manage to beat Livingston.’’

Midfielder Alan Thompson will miss the match through suspension.

The English star produced two glorious strikes in last weekend’s 3-0 Tennent’s Scottish Cup semi-final victory over Ayr United.

But Thompson will now sit out again as he completes a three-match suspension which he received after his sending-off against Aberdeen.

It is a frustrating time for the former Aston Villa and Bolton midfielder, but he revealed a cup final win over Rangers would ease the agony.

‘‘An Old Firm cup final will be a first for me as well as a couple of the other lads,’’ said Thompson.

‘‘If we were able to go on and win that game then it would make up for missing next week when the boys could go out and wrap up the title.

‘‘As each game goes by it doesn’t get any easier having to sit out, but I’ve just got one more match of my suspension to go.’’

Celtic are currently 13 points clear of closest rivals Rangers at the top of the SPL.

But Thompson reckons it has been even more difficult to retain the title than it was to win it last season.

‘‘It’s been harder this year to defend the title,’’ he told the Celtic View.

‘‘We are a bit stronger mentally which plays a big part, and playing in the Champions League this season also improved us that way.

‘‘Playing in the Champions League again next season is something that everyone would love to be involved in, but before we think about that we have to concentrate on making sure we get there.

‘‘The only way to do that is to win the title as soon as we possibly can.’’
