Trade Unions and the Western Health board are meeting this morning to discuss 200 job cuts of clerical workers in the region.

Health Board Chief Executive, Dr Sheila Ryan, said last night after a meeting with the Department of Health, that the number of job losses may be rounded down. She also said any cuts would not affect patient care.

However, Impact’s Kevin Callinan, who’s representing clerical staff, says any cuts will have repercussions.

"It is crucial that where we have shortages for doctors, nurses and various health professions, they should be allowed concentrate on their core skills.

"We needed additional administrative clerical staff to in order to let that to happen. If these people aren’t employed, the entire health service is going to suffer, including clients and patients."
