Forensic experts are examining the scene of a house fire in which a young woman and her five-year-old nephew died.

Forensic experts are examining the scene of a house fire in which a young woman and her five-year-old nephew died.

The blaze was discovered at a terraced house at Nutley Avenue in Mahon, Cork, at around 3.15am.

There were eight people in the house at the time, including four young children.

Six managed to escape but a 25-year-old woman and a five-year-old boy who were trapped inside died.

They were pronounced dead at Cork University Hospital.

Those who fled the fire included a 54-year-old man, a 49-year-old woman, a 21-year-old woman, a four-year-old boy and two girls, aged five and two.

Gardaí said they are carrying out a technical examination.
