Turner best at Haydock

It was girl power all the way at Haydock as Hayley Turner gave Barshiba a brilliant ride to win back-to-back renewals of the Bet365 Lancashire Oaks.

It was girl power all the way at Haydock as Hayley Turner gave Barshiba a brilliant ride to win back-to-back renewals of the Bet365 Lancashire Oaks.

David Elsworth's six-year-old had sprung a surprise 12 months ago as a 12-1 winner but was sent off the 7-2 second-favourite on this occasion.

Nothing else seemed keen on making the running so Turner, partnering the Jeff Smith-owned mare for the third time, took the initiative.

Barshiba is blind in one eye having been kicked by her mother as a foal, but it has not harmed her talent and despite seemingly setting the race up for the likes of Les Fazzani, Grace O'Malley and Lady Jane Digby, she found plenty for pressure.

It was the most prestigious win of Turner's career, coming as it did at Group Two level, and she held off the late thrust of Polly's Mark by three-quarters of a length.

"She's so tough it's unreal," beamed Turner.

"She just finds form at this time of year and she won it very easily last year as well.

"Despite being blind in the eye on the side they were challenging on, she knew they were there and she just kept finding for me, she made it a real test."

Options for the teak-tough winner could again include the Aphrodite Stakes at Newmarket, another race she won last year.

Dangerous Midge ran away with the Bet365 Old Newton Cup to turn what looked a competitive renewal into a procession.

Martin Dwyer had Brian Meehan's four-year-old sat just behind the pace-making Almiqdaad and when he took up the running two furlongs out nothing could get near him.

Throughout the final furlong the 17-2 chance went further and further clear to come home in splendid isolation, with Demolition some eight lengths back in second and top weight Fiery Lad in third.

Dwyer said: "He's a good horse, he's improving and there's not many miles on the clock.

"He tends to race lazily and we worked him in blinkers to wake him up a bit.

"I gave him a forceful ride today and he felt good."

Roger Charlton apparently has a very nice prospect on his hands as Bated Breath (4-5 favourite) maintained his unbeaten record with some panache in the Poker At Bet365 Handicap.

Given a confident ride by Richard Hughes, once more in the famous Prince Khalid Abdullah silks, he never came out of second gear in beating Little Garcon by three lengths.

Genki (13-8 favourite) gave Charlton a double in the Bet365.com Conditions Stakes.

'Winner' of his race on the far side in the Wokingham at Royal Ascot, he just edged out Rileyskeepingfaith and Castles In The Air by a neck and a head.

Victor Chandler make him 8-1 co-favourite for the Stewards' Cup, for which he will carry 9st 6lb which includes a 3lb penalty.

There was a major shock in the opener when unlucky Royal Ascot loser Berling was well beaten as the 2-5 favourite behind Anhar in the Bet365.com Handicap.

John Dunlop's Berling flashed home late to be fifth in the King George V Stakes at the big meeting and up against just four rivals, he looked to face a straightforward task.

However, despite hitting the front two furlongs out, the grey failed to pull away and Ted Durcan always looked to be travelling better on Godolphin's Anhar.

He powered clear to beat Bowdler's Magic by a length and a half with Mecox Bay third and the market leader only fourth.

Durcan said: "It was a good performance because he had 9st 7lb as well and they went no pace which didn't suit him.

"Once I angled him out he was always going to win and Saeed (Bin Suroor, trainer) has always liked him.

"He'll be even better in a strongly-run race."

The winner was given a 20-1 quote by the sponsors for the Ladbrokes St Leger.
