Redknapp and Wenger set for busy deadline day

Harry Redknapp and Arsene Wenger are among the Barclays Premier League bosses flexing their muscles for one final spending spree before the transfer window slams shut tonight.

Tottenham boss Redknapp is closing in on West Ham midfielder Scott Parker after the player handed in a transfer request at Upton Park, but is holding firm on Luka Modric despite more interest from Chelsea.

Redknapp, who expects more movement before the transfer window shuts, said of Parker: “He’s a good player, I think he’s what we need. He’s a good lad, he has a great attitude. He’ll be a good addition for this team.”

Arsenal manager Wenger is gambling on leaving it late to give his squad a much-needed boost as he looks to seal deals with Brazilian Andre Santos and Germany defender Per Mertesacker, who has flown in for a medical.

Meanwhile Liverpool last night confirmed the signing of Uruguay centre-back Sebastian Coates on a long-term contract. The 20-year-old completed his move from Nacional after securing a work permit.

Out-of-favour midfielder Joe Cole is reportedly in talks over a loan move to French club Lille, while David Ngog has been linked with Bolton. Raul Meireles has emerged as a target for Chelsea.

Meanwhile Owen Hargreaves is reportedly in talks over a shock move to Manchester City, despite fears he would be forced to drop down a level after extensive surgery on both his knees.

City goalkeeper Joe Hart said: “It would be a good signing. He has struggled a bit since he came to Manchester United but that is not down to ability, just his fitness.

“He was a very important England player, and if he could get back that form, obviously he would be an asset.”

Newcastle have signed left-back Davide Santon from Inter Milan for around £5million on a five-year deal, seeking to plug the gap following the recent loss of Jose Enrique to Liverpool.
